NEVADA - The South Hamilton boys' basketball team doubled its scoring total over the final 8 minutes of play here last night, but by then it was too late.
Nevada built an 18-point lead, 48-30, after three quarters and hung on despite the rally to edge South Hamilton by 10, 70-60, in the season opener for both teams.
It left Hawks' first-year head coach B.J. Terrones a little dejected afterwards, but he said there was plenty to build on in preparation for Friday's home debut against Saydel.
"The thing I like is that the guys did not give up. They played the full four quarters," Terrones said. "I think this is a very good measuring stick against a quality Heart of Iowa (conference) team; Nevada is going to be there at the end near the top of the conference."
South Hamilton (0-1, 0-1 HOIC) had four players reach double figures. Justin Shepherd led the way with 12 points, Josh Doering knocked in 11, and Matt Hislop and John Hegland both added 10.
Owen Shawgo paced Nevada (1-0, 1-0) with 14 points. Brook Thompson and Colynn Black both had 11, and Tate Handsaker scored 10 before fouling out.
