ELLSWORTH The Ellsworth City Council and mayor had a busy session earlier this month, and started off the meeting with a public hearing on submission of a community development block grant for a water main replacement and installation project.

Carissa Miller, of MIDAS Council of Governments, attended the meeting to present information on the project. After everyone present had the opportunity to be heard, and with no objections, the council voted to submit the grant application.

Letters had been sent to seven engineering firms requesting submission of engineering qualifications for final design of the project. Schlotfelt Engineering Inc., and MER Engineering Inc. were the only firms to submit their qualifications. After reviewing the applications, the City Council selected Schlotfelt Engineering for final design of the water main improvement project, contingent on the city receiving the CBBG.

In other business, the council authorized Mayor Brent Hodnefield to sign the Resource Enhancement and Protection Fund grant agreement for the $50,000 grant the city received from the Iowa DNR. The grant funds will be used for engineering, clearing, trail bed prep work, and trail surfacing of 2,100 feet of the Jewellsworth Trail Project.

Other business at the meeting was the final reading of an ordinance on open burning. The council unanimously approved the ordinance. The ordinance states there is no open burning closer than 50 feet to a neighboring residential premise, someone must be in attendance and have a water supply readily available. Recreational burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor is prohibited also, and law enforcement is authorized to order a residential premise to cease burning.

The council decided that an inventory of smoke alarms and fire extinguishers on city property should be taken. The council members will review the findings at the December meeting.
