The wine and spirits section of the Webster City Hy-Vee opened Nov. 6 and offers 3,000 items, according to sine and spirits manager Dave Durivage.
He said business has been steady since what he called the soft opening of the section, which features about 300 new beer items, 300 new spirits and 150 new wines. That's a much larger section than the old wine and spirits section of the store, which Durivage also managed. He said he is in charge of a lot of things at the store, and continuing his management of the section just made sense.
"At the time that we decided to put this together, it was just easy for one of us managers to take on this additional responsibility," Durivage said.

Construction at Hy-Vee went through Fall and will continue until the second week of December. Durivage said once the section was built, moving in was easy. After shelving was put up and items were transferred over, corporate staff brought in distributors to set up their products. The pricing and labeling of those items then took about three days.
Hy-Vee is looking to expand its selection. Durivage said they welcome requests for wine, spirits or beer to be stocked in the new section. He said they bring in 10 to 15 new items per week that are requested by shoppers.
"If someone is interested in requesting an item, just talk to one of us, we'll get their name and request down and we'll Google it and try to find a distributor," Durivage said.
In addition to a walk in cooler and a mixed six pack section, Hy-Vee will also host a wine tasting the third Tuesday of every month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with six to eight wines to sample. The store is also starting a beer club in a similar fashion, where several beers will be available to try.
