WILLIAMS - In an effort to become more viable, the United Postal Service announced Thursday that the Williams Post Office will have reduced hours of operation.

The Williams Post Office hours will be reduced to four hours daily, according to Williams Post Office Officer in Chief Mary Hassebrook. The operating hours will not take effect before Jan. 12.

The new hours would be from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday's hours would remain the same from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. Currently, the Williams Post Office is open for an abbreviated time on Saturday morning and on Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. - 3:55 p.m. with the window closed for the noon hour.

Williams Post Office learned Thursday that it will soon be operating with reduced hours of service.

A public meeting drew only one patron to the Williams Post Office Thursday afternoon for the announcement made by Sharon King-Scroggins, Manager of Post Office operations for Area 7 in Iowa. Public meetings have been slated throughout the nation to announce future plans for U.S. Post Office and area branch offices.

The reduced hours were based on survey results of options offered to Post Office patrons earlier this fall. Patrons had the option of closing their local Post Office or reducing hours.

Post offices chosen for reduced operating hours were based on the amount of patron use and revenue, said Hassebrock.

Once the reduced hours have been implemented, the USPS will later re-evaluate the service, said Hassebrock. Hours could be reduced to two hours daily without closing the Williams branch, she said.
