To the Editor:
A friend shared the campaign literature left in her door by Jerry Behn. This flyer listed talking points on Iowa education, budget and taxes, jobs and agriculture. Jerry has been my state senator for more than 15 years. Point for point, I want to compare his flyer with facts:
He says we should provide great teachers in every classroom - he votes no for education initiatives that would fund proposals that support teachers;
He says we should provide adequate financial resources for education - he has consistently voted no on appropriations/allowable growth bills for public education since he became a senator;
He says he supports world-class standards and a rigorous curriculum - he was against the statewide Iowa Core Curriculum initiative;
He voted against the statewide voluntary preschool programming for four-year-olds;
He voted against programs for our youngest citizens, including day care and health insurance.
Let's support a great teacher from Senate District 24, someone who is in the classroom and knows the issues facing educators, families and communities. Support Shelly Stotts.
Shelly believes that children and their families need a strong advocate working for them at the State House. She sees too many students coming to school without their basic needs for food, shelter and clothing being met. She will work hard to support local job growth, a healthy environment for future generations, quality education programs for preschoolers, K-12 students and our students at Iowa's community colleges and universities. She will support safe, affordable care for elderly citizens, too,
Vote for Shelly Stotts for Senate District 24. We need her strong work ethic and great sense of caring for all Iowans in the State Legislature.
