Ski trails benefit from hotel/motel tax

October 12, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

To the Editor:

As president of the Boone River Country Ski Club, I can honestly say that if it weren't for the grant of $1,000 from the current hotel/motel tax in 2008, we would not have groomed ski trails in Hamilton County when it snows.

For the average winter, our trails in Briggs Woods and the 5k race course laid on Briggs Woods Golf Course attract hundreds of skiers to our area from as far away as Kansas City and Wisconsin. I'm told that our 5k course is one of only a few in Iowa that meet race requirements of one-third flat, one-third uphill and one-third downhill. And best of all, the trails are free to everybody. This tax costs you nothing so please vote yes, and pray for snow.
