AMES - Hate isn't a strong enough word to describe Jacob Heeren's attitude towards running in the wind.

"It's awful. Just awful," Heeren, a South Hamilton sophomore, said.

Awful was actually award-winning for Heeren yesterday though, as he put aside his personal feelings and battled the southerly winds to place 10th and earn an all-conference medal at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet on the 5K ISU course. It was a giant leap up the leaderboard from last year when he finished 30th.

South Hamilton sophomore Jacob Heeren (931) closes on a North Polk runner as they race into the wind at Monday’s HOIC meet in Ames. Heeren placed 10th.

"Last year wasn't too good, so this year, getting all-conference, it's the best feeling in the world," Heeren said. "All of that hard work has paid off."

The desire to reach the podium won the battle against the gusts that reached as high as 30 miles per hour, and Heeren was able to coast the final 100 meters with no one pushing from behind to finish in 18 minutes, 27.63 seconds.

"Before the start of the race I told all the guys that it was going to be the worst run ever because it was windy, but I guess it went all right," he said. "I don't know how to describe running into the wind ... it's like you're pushing a wall of 100 pounds because it was at the end (of the race yesterday), so you're already tired. It's tough."
