Cousins Law is topic of meeting

LWV to host program by Robin Arnold

October 9, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

The Hamilton County League of Women Voters will hold a public program Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Webster City Fires Station, featuring Robin Arnold, of Cedar Falls, who will discuss the proposed Cousins Law.

Arnold will give a background into this bill that may be considered by the Iowa Legislature in January. The proposed bill is gaining momentum through an online petition drive. The bill relates to two missing cousins from Evansdale. Nine-year-old Elizabeth Collins and 10-year-old Lyric Cook have been missing since July 13.

The proposed Cousins Law features five guidelines concerning missing children:

Parents would need to report their child missing right away, otherwise they would be fined.

Law enforcement will access the national nonprofit service called "A Child is Missing."

The third guideline would involve voluntary vehicle searches.

The fourth is to have a "Cousins Law" alert shown on billboards and other roadside signs.

Eight hours missing, it would be time to look into the hot spots for human trafficking.
