Something missing from parade

September 24, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

To the Editor:

I just returned home from watching the Homecoming parade. It was a fine parade with floats, bands, football players and cheerleaders. Oh, yes, something was missing. Did you notice? If you did, does it upset you? It was the American Flag. I could not believe that the flag did not lead the parade! Is this the way show pride in our country?

Patriotism. Is it here in Webster City? Is it taught in our schools? Do we even say the Pledge of Allegiance any more? Well, I sure hope so. Is it too much to ask that "Old Glory" our flag, lead the way? Our youth need to see our patriotism and the greatness of this nation.

This is the greatest country in the world and many paid the ultimate price for us to have parades, games and all we take for granted. Yes, we are a melting pot, but it is still America. Let the American Flag always lead the way.
