The Daily Freeman Journal

STORY CITY - Leading has always been easy for Kayla Lucas and Jacob Heeren. Winning has been a different story though.

Until now.

The South Hamilton sophomores both stepped into the pot of gold here yesterday evening, as Lucas and Heeren won their respective races at the Norsemen Invitational.

Lucas navigated the 4-kilometer girls' layout at River Bend Golf Course in 15 minutes, 45 seconds. Heeren notched a 5K time of 17:38.

"They both ran really well," South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said of his two champions. "Kayla really went out strong at the beginning, and Jacob just looked really strong."

Allyson Ervin joined Lucas in the top 10 and Meghan Fisher returned from a two-meet absence because of injury to snag a spot in the first 15 across. They helped the 13th-ranked (Class 2A) Hawks win the team title - their first of the season - with 57 points, five ahead of runner-up Roland-Story (62).
