HUMBOLDT - Small schools, big schools, it didn't matter. They were all thrown together yesterday at the Humboldt Invitational.

And that bump up in competition worked to the benefit of the South Hamilton girls' cross country team.

Facing their toughest competition of the season, the 14th-ranked (Class 2A) Hawks nudged their way into the top five of the team standings behind another sterling performance from sophomore leader Kayla Lucas.

Lucas continued to lower her 4-kilometer time, as she circled the Humboldt Country Club in 16 minutes, 28 seconds to finish in the ninth-place position. There were 128 runners entered.

South Hamilton placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 80 en route to 181 points and a fifth-place result.

"Overall the girls looked pretty strong," South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said. "The kids felt really good when they got done, and competing against bigger schools is only going to make us better."
