All five Shoppers Supply stores in Iowa have been sold to Sioux City-based Bomgaars.

Dave Meyer, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Bomgaars, confirmed the purchase Thursday and said the sale becomes effective Oct. 1.

"They will continue as Shoppers Supply through the holiday season," he said. Meyer added that the conversion to Bomgaars signage and complete integration into the Bomgaars system will take place over the winter and should be complete by March or April.

Meyer and Jim Schmidt, president of Shoppers Supply, both stressed that Bomgaars plans to keep all of the Shoppers Supply stores in Iowa open. Schmidt said he anticipates that most of his company's Iowa employees will be retained as part of the Bomgaars team.

Bomgaars currently owns 60 stores in six states - Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. The addition of the Iowa Shoppers Supply stores is a logical expansion of the company, Meyer said.

"We are in the same area," he said. "We are the same type of company. A lot of the product is the same. We saw an opportunity to grow our company."

Schmidt said he wanted to thank the customers who have helped build Shoppers Supply and had praise for the new owner.

"The town will enjoy Bomgaars," he said." It is a family owned company like Shoppers Supply."

Schmidt said Shoppers Supply's corporate future lies in Arizona where it already has a store at Apache Junction.

"We have an opportunity to expand in Arizona," he said.
