To the Editor
This was one year when we Stanhope Lions would not have cared one bit if it had really rained on our parade. Oh, we had a few sprinkles as the parade watchers assembled, but not near enough to cancel. A good crowd was on hand last Saturday for our 55th Watermelon Day for which we were very thankful. With all the other activities as cited in your Readers Talk Back section last Wednesday, (RAGBRAI, the county fair, concerts, Little League games and races) we were delighted to host our usual crowd. The front page "Seed-spittin' fun" article last Friday no doubt served as a good reminder of the Stanhope event in view of everything else going on. That was greatly appreciated.
Our Stanhope club remains indebted to the many locals who turn out to assist with the many rides and games. Special thanks goes to the watermelon day committee for helping so much with securing the entertainment, seeking assistance for the stands, and getting the softball tournament organized. Members of the Stanhope Fire Department who assist in so many ways cannot be thanked enough. And we cannot forget all those who bake and donate pies and work so hard in the food stand! Even the weatherman cooperated with not extremely hot temperatures.
We wish to thank the following merchants for their generous donations: Co-Op Telephone Exchange serving Kamrar and Stanhope, Timm's, United Co-Op, Embroidery by Design, NAPA Auto Parts, Central Iowa Building Supply, Gerber Auto, Casady Bros. Implement, Arnold Motor Supply, Tolle Automotive, Foster Funeral Home, Ingraham Construction, Motor Inn of WC, North Central Turf, and Mid Iowa Truck Services.
To the many families who brought youngsters to play the games and ride the rides, we say thank you. We are in turn rewarded by the delight expressed on young faces over and over.
Where else can we go these days for low cost food and entertainment for all to enjoy? Thank you to all who came and gave us support. You, each and everyone, are truly appreciated.

Stanhope Lions Club
