BASEBALL: No. 3 Lions show Lynx the exit in 5 innings

Seven errors leave WCHS with no shot of pulling off upset

CLEAR LAKE - No. 3-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake slapped 14 hits, 13 of which were singles, and took advantage of seven Webster City errors to roll in a North Central Conference baseball game last night.

The Lions (28-4, 13-2 NCC) kept their conference championship hopes alive by scoring in all five innings; they put up five runs in the opening frame, and put up five more in the third.

"They're a top five team in 3A. They hit the ball hard, and they're just a good team," WCHS head coach Seth McGrane said. "I expect them to be a state tournament team."

McGrane conceded that Clear Lake - which still has one date left with conference-leader Algona Bishop Garrigan - put the pressure on his defense, but the Lynx were their own worst enemy at times.

"I think we could have played them a lot closer, but the seven errors obviously hurt," he said. "I can think of two (of the errors) where we just didn't make the average play."

The Lynx touched Clear Lake pitcher Michael Keeran for seven hits, and they scored once in the second inning, twice in the third and twice in the fifth.
