CLARION - Tough losses have been a never-ending ritual for the Webster City baseball team this season. But none have been more difficult to take than last night's extra-innings setback against Clarion-Goldfield.
Leading 6-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lynx gave up three runs to send the game on, and in the ninth the Cowboys delivered with a walk-off base hit by Jake Haberman to steal the North Central Conference clash, 7-6.
"This is the toughest loss of the year," WCHS head coach Seth McGrane said. "All of the kids deserved better than they got (last night)."
But WCHS (5-15, 2-10 NCC) was its own worst enemy at crucial times. An error, two walks and a hit batter put Clarion-Goldfield (11-9, 4-8 NCC) in position to rally in the seventh, and Logan Reichter came though in the clutch with a two-RBI single to knot the game at 6.
The Lynx committed another error and issued the 11th walk of the evening in the ninth.
"The walks hurt, and the two errors that we had came at pretty crucial times, too," McGrane said.

The Lynx fired out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, courtesy of three hits. Fielder plated the game's first run on a RBI single that brought Davis to the dish, Stoakes followed with a RBI two-bagger, and Sam Mossman allowed courtesy runner Cal Zahn to score on a base hit.
WCHS will be back on its home diamond on Wednesday to host Hampton-Dumont at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, the Lynx will host fifth-ranked (Class 1A) Algona Bishop Garrigan in a league doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
