WEBSTER CITY - With one swing of the bat, St. Edmond designated hitter Hank Crimmins crushed the spirits inside the Webster City dugout last night at Lynx Field.

Crimmins crushed a Trey Tesdahl fastball over the fence in left-center field for a first-inning grand slam and the second-ranked (Class 2A) Gaels cruised to a 12-3 victory to earn a season sweep of the Lynx.

"After the grand slam you saw the heads kind of start to hang and it spiraled from there," WCHS head coach Seth McGrane said. "That was huge in the first inning and they definitely had the momentum."

WCHS senior Sam Mossmann attempts to change directions on the run while caught in a rundown between first and second base against St. Edmond last night at Lynx Field. Mossman was eventually tagged out trying to get back to first and the No. 2-ranked (Gaels) rolled by the Lynx, 12-3.

St. Edmond (13-4, 5-2 NCC) finished with 15 hits off Tesdahl and reliever Ben Mossman. Nick Clark went a perfect 5 for 5 at the dish with a double; Crimmins also blasted a double into the gap in left-center, and speedster Neil Flattery found the gap and raced around the bases for a triple.

But Tesdahl and Mossman didn't exactly get a lot of support from their defense. WCHS (3-9, 1-6 NCC) committed six errors in the contest and stretched innings too long; eventually the explosive Gael bats came alive.

"Against a team like St. Edmond, you can't get behind," McGrane said. "Another thing is you can't make six errors against a team like that and expect to even be in the ballgame, and that's why we weren't."

It was 6-0 in St. Edmond's favor when the Lynx finally got to freshman pitcher Landon Peed for two runs in the bottom of the third inning. St. Edmond tacked on a single run in the fourth, four more in the sixth and one in the seventh before WCHS responded with a run in the last half of the seventh.

Peed allowed just four hits, all of which were singles. Dylan Fielder went 2 for 4 in the clean-up spot for the Lynx, while Tesdahl and Caleb Crouthamel both went 1 for 4.

Alex Oswald collected two runs batted in on ground balls.

WCHS will try to rebound tonight, but it won't be easy against Carroll Kuemper, which beat St. Edmond 7-5 earlier this season. On Wednesday, the Lynx will face an even tougher task against fifth-ranked (3A) and conference leader Clear Lake.

Both games will take place at Lynx Field. The first pitches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
