SH scores 31 runs in wins over CAL and Gilbert at Trojet Invite

The Daily Freeman Journal

WILLIAMS - Playing in its second tournament in as many days, the South Hamilton softball team unleashed its full potential offensively en route to a pair of victories here on Saturday.

An easy opening round win over CAL, 22-0 in 3 innings, followed by a hard-fought championship victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Gilbert, 8-7 in 8 innings, gave the Hawks (3-9) the Northeast Hamilton Trojet Invite title.

"Everyone came out ready to play and that was great to see," South Hamilton head coach Tarin Bell said. "(The win over Gilbert) was by far the best game we've played this year and you could tell they really wanted that win, and they definitely earned it."

South Hamilton scored the winning run against Gilbert in the top of the eighth inning on Mattea Detrick's safety squeeze bunt. It brought Kayla Lucas sprinting to the dish; Lucas opened the frame on second base because of the international tiebreaker rule.

Hawks' pitcher Brittany Nicholson took care of the rest, as she fanned three consecutive Tigers in the bottom of the eighth.

Detrick and Shannon Hoyle both had three hits in the win. Detrick ripped a triple and drove in two runs, while Hoyle connected for three singles and collected one RBI. Ella Jans added a double and two RBIs.

URBANDALE - South Hamilton went 0-2 on Friday at the Urbandale Classic, dropping decisions to Norwalk, 9-8, and Clarke of Osceola, 8-1.

"We obviously played some good teams and they played very well," Tarin Bell said. "We hit the ball hard, we just couldn't string the hits together to score people when we needed."

The Hawks piled up 17 hits in the loss to Norwalk, including a 4 for 4 outing from Brittany Nicholson, who was making her season debut. Nicholson drilled a double, and Tiffany Jacobson added two extra-base hits and drove in two runs.

Shannon Hoyle hit a second-inning solo bomb, her fourth of the season, and Elisabeth Elsner slapped a pair of singles and drove in two.

Norwalk touched Nicholson for 12 hits, and scored three runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the win.

Clarke scored in all five of its at bats in the shortened 6-inning game, including four times in the second to seize control for good.

Hoyle laced a triple and Nicholson added two singles in the loss.

South Hamilton will get back to conference play at home tonight against Roland-Story at 7:30 p.m.
