8th-grader Miller belts Bulldogs by Lynx in high-scoring showdown

HAMPTON - North Central Conference, meet Bailey Miller. Get used to hearing the name, because he's going to be a thorn in the side for a long time.

Miller, just an eighth grader and already the starting catcher for Hampton-Dumont, had an electrifying coming out party at Webster City's expense Friday night, as he went 4 for 4 - highlighted by a fourth-inning three-run bomb over the center field fence, the first of his career - and drove in six runs to lead the Bulldogs to a wild 13-11 victory.

"He had a heck of a night," WCHS head coach Seth McGrane said of Miller, noting the youngster also smacked a double. "His home run was a shot; there was no doubt about it."

Hampton-Dumont (6-6, 3-4 NCC) shelled Lynx starting pitcher Jonny Davis and reliever Cody Jondal for 13 hits. But WCHS (3-8, 1-5 NCC) was up to the task with nine hits, and the Lynx led 9-8 after 5 innings until the Bulldogs reeled off five runs in the last half of the sixth to take the lead for good.

"Both teams hit the ball really well," McGrane said. "Normally when we get nine hits we're going to be on the winning side, but we didn't get as many timely hits as they did."

Sophomore Dylan Fielder ignited the high-scoring affair in the first inning when he belted a two-run dinger - his first of the season - to left-center field off Bulldogs' starter Cody Prantner.
