Thanks to all who helped with the Avenue of Flags

June 6, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

To the editor:

The Avenue of Flags committee of American Legion Post 191 extends its sincere appreciation for one of the most successful displays of our beautiful flags at Graceland cemetery since the beginning in 1989.

First of all, a special thank you to Harold Martin for 22 years of faithful service to the Avenue of Flags 17 as chairman.

Thanks to everyone for being careful as you drove through the cemetery. Damage this year involved three lower sections. Due to the high winds an estimated 50 flags had shredding and the Raskas are now repairing them. Thanks again to Vern and Mabel.

Here are some thank yous to those who helped. Hopefully, no one was missed. They include Custom Meats for continuing to provide storage and their employees for getting the trailers in and out of storage; the Police Department for escort and extra patrolling; Graceland Cemetery for providing storage for the trailers while the flags were flying; Art Philbrook, Ron Keigan and Jim Burnett for trailer power; Bob Goretska for his work on the Boulevard of Valor; Vern Ratcliff for furnishing two golf carts; High School Wrestling Coach Ted Larson and his wrestling team; Boy Scouts, Legionnaires, and especially the Daily Freeman-Journal and KQWC radio for media coverage.

There were many favorable comments about the flag display. Despite the winds, overall the weather was excellent for the parade and program.

Again, thanks to one and all who were workers, participants and for being present for some of the activities.

Ron Keigan, chairman
