JEWELL - The South Hamilton baseball team was patient at the plate and that discipline paid off Friday night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.
The Hawks took advantage of eight free bases via walks and hit batters and turned several of them into runs, which offset the fact that they were limited to just three hits, in a 5-3 victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Jefferson-Scranton.
"We really stressed cutting down on our strikeouts and it was nice to see all that work paying off," South Hamilton head coach Bret Bell said, noting his team whiffed 36 times in the five games leading up to Friday's encounter, but only went down four times against the Rams.
Justin Shepherd, Chris Jacobson and Trevor Ullestad accounted for the team's hits off Jefferson-Scranton pitcher Matt Paulsen. Jacobson drove in one run, as did Jordan Sogard, and Lucas Olson plated three, including one in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk that gave South Hamilton the lead for good.
Ullestad, a sophomore, earned the win on the bump. The right-hander went five innings and allowed just five hits. He walked five and struck out four before handing the ball over to reliever Cole Swenson, who got the save after throwing two scoreless innings. Swenson struck out two.

STORY CITY - Cole Swenson played long ball twice, Trevor Ullestad followed suit once and the South Hamilton baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Scandinavian Days tournament.
The Hawks gave away a 7-2 lead to Roland-Story, as the host Norsemen scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the opener, 8-7. But South Hamilton (6-3) turned the tide on Eagle Grove by plating eight runs in its last at bat to pull away, 14-5, in the consolation round.
Swenson bashed a first-inning grand slam to left-center field against Roland-Story, and he added a fifth-inning two-run shot versus Eagle Grove. Ullestad highlighted the seven-run seventh against the Eagles with his own two-run shot. The Hawks had 12 hits in the win.
"It was nice to see that we came back against Eagle Grove and took it to them," South Hamilton head coach Bret Bell said. "When our offense is on, it's really on."
Devin Howard pitched the initial 52?3 innings against Roland-Story, and Lane Heinlein took the loss.
Chris Jacobson collected two hits, while Howard, Heinlein and Jordan Sogard all had one.
Howard went 2 for 4 with three RBIs against the Eagles. Jacobson, Ullestad and Justin Shepherd all had two hits as well and they combined to drive in four runs.
Adam Carey claimed the win on the hill in relief of Josh Doering.
