Benyomin "Ben" Silverstein, 71, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2012 surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel, 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312. Burial will be at Jewish Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.
Ben Silverstein was born in Navasota, Texas on September 10, 1940, the son of Myer and Rose Silverstein and grew up in Webster City, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa and in 1960 returned to Webster City to join the family business. In 1982, Ben became CEO of Scrap Processors, Inc. where he worked until his retirement in 2009. Besides spending time with family and friends, Ben's greatest joy was his time as an owner of the Iowa Barnstormers. Ben will always be remembered for his love of dogs.
Ben is survived by his wife, Deborah; three children, Jamie (Brian) Thomas, Jody (Jimmy) Robbins and David (Andrea) Silverstein; two stepchildren, Stacy Acheson and Amy (Mike) Pardubsky; nine grandchildren, Bryan Jr. and Cameron Thomas, Jessica and Meghan Robbins, Colin and Ethan Silverstein, Ariston Velman, Kenna Acheson and Joe Pardubsky. Loving uncle, cousin and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Myer and Rose Silverstein; and his brother, Kenneth Silverstein.
