We've been busy marking off the days on the calendar as July 24 approaches. For those of you who have been out of the country or under a rock for the past five months, that's the day Webster City will host an overnight stay by the bicyclists on the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa - otherwise known as RAGBRAI.
If you've been watching the countdown on the front page of the Daily Freeman-Journal, the arrival of those 20,000 bicyclists is inching ever closer.? Just 50 days away now.
Committees have been hard work organizing everything from a memorable greeting to where the RVs will park to where the concert will be held to how to keep 20,000 visitors as well as our residents safe. It takes a mammoth effort on the part of local volunteers to plan every nuance of the hours the riders will be in Webster City. Under the direction of the executive committee, these folks have been looking at safety issues, housing and sanitation matters, how to get cyclists from the campground to the main entertainment areas and many other aspects of this big undertaking.
Volunteers are still needed, vendors are still needed and housing is still needed.
There are still many ways to be involved in the celebration. Contact the Chamber of Commerce to volunteer your time and talents. They can also direct you to the appropriate people if you are interested in housing or vending opportunities.
This is really a time for Webster City to shine. It's a chance to show people our beautiful community- with it's green spaces, recreational trails, wonderful shops and restaurants and of course, friendly faces.
It's been 32 years since we've hosted RAGBRAI, and back then it was just a few thousand riders. This year, on July 24, we'll likely triple the population of Webster City for one night. So, if you haven't already, why not sign up to help out?
And keep wearing those bright yellow RAGBRAI?T-shirts on Tuesdays. It's amazing to see that blaze of color when you walk into a business.
