The Daily Freeman Journal

GRUNDY CENTER - The South Hamilton baseball team had a rough opener, but rebounded to win its second game to place third at yesterday's Grundy Center Memorial Day Tournament.

Iowa Falls-Alden scored in five of its six at bats to thump the Hawks, 11-1 in 6 innings, in the opening round. South Hamilton (3-1) turned the tables on Grundy Center, 10-1, in the consolation game.

Cadets' pitcher Branden Qualley limited the Hawks to just one hit - a double off the bat of Justin Shepherd - in a complete-game win. Devin Howard took the loss on the mound.

South Hamilton shelled Grundy Center hurlers Tyler Harken and Clay Geiter for eight hits. Chris Jacobson went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and stolen bases, while Trevor Ullestad drove in two runs with a single. Shepherd had another double, and Jordan Sogard was 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

Ullestad was the winning pitcher. He went 5 innings.
