WEBSTER CITY - It's tough to hit fairways when the butterflies are churning non-stop, but Collin Swenson learned to adapt pretty well.
Despite being admittedly nervous, the Northeast Hamilton senior scrambled his way to a top-10 finish at the Class 1A state golf tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora over the weekend.
The first-time state qualifier shot an 85 in Round 1 on Friday to sit in eighth place, and he followed it up with an 83 on Saturday during the final round for a 36-hole total of 168. It placed him ninth overall.
"I didn't really play the way I wanted both days, but that's the way things go," Swenson said. "I didn't hit too many fairways and that got me into trouble, but I was a little more nervous than I thought I would be, too."
Friday's round was marred by rain showers, and the pin placements on Saturday proved to be tricky for everyone in the field.
Swenson said his game might not have been at its best, but a top-10 finish against a field of the state's best golfers brought a smile to his face.

Clarksville senior Jaron Wagner (86-83-169) took the last top-10 spot.
Swenson and Barron were in the same group on Friday, and the Trojan senior said it was good to see a conference rival claim the top prize.
"I was really happy for him," Swenson said. "He's a really nice kid."
