CEDAR FALLS - With a chip-in for birdie on his 18th and final hole of regulation, Northeast Hamilton senior Collin Swenson was able to exhale.

He'd made it.

After coming up short in each of his first three seasons, Swenson cleared the postseason hurdle and advanced out of the Class 1A district round and onto the state meet on Friday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

Northeast Hamilton senior Collin Swenson is relegated to holding the flag for his playing partners after he chipped in for birdie on his final hole at a Class 1A district meet at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls on Friday. Swenson shot a 75 to qualify for this week’s state meet at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

Swenson carded a 3-over par 75 - he fired a 1-over 37 on the inward nine and a 2-over 38 on the outward nine - to tie Carson Barron of Don Bosco and Levin Fink of Valley Community for the top score in the field of 64 golfers. The three trudged back out onto the course for a sudden-death playoff to decide the district champion; Swenson settled for third.

Swenson, Barron, Fink and Jason Wagner (77) of Clarksville all earned automatic bids to the state meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora.

Swenson, who recorded four birdies on Friday, follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Ryan, who was a two-time state qualifier for Northeast Hamilton in 2007 and 2008. Ryan Swenson placed eighth at the state meet as a senior in 2008.

Collin Swenson will continue to follow the path already taken by his brother next year when he joins the Ellsworth Community College golf team.

Mason City Newman (330) and Lake Mills (336) claimed the top two spots in the team standings to advance to state.
