AMES - Dave Brighton was already looking towards the future, even before all of the scores had been posted Friday afternoon at the Coldwater Golf Links.

With five underclassmen standing nearby, the Webster City boys' golf coach knows his program is headed in the right direction, even if the Lynx didn't advance out of the Class 3A sectional meet.

"The good thing is we're looking forward to next year," Brighton said after his squad shot a 366 to place seventh in the eight-team field. "With all of the young kids that we have, they're only going to get better. We've made progress and we're moving in the right direction."

Webster City golfer Doug Stoakes gets out of trouble from tall grass at the par-4 13th hole at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames on Friday. He somehow got the 60-yard blast onto the green and he shot a 94 at the Class 3A sectional meet.

Sophomore Jake Daniels was inserted into the six-player lineup Friday morning, and he made the coach's decision pay off as he led the Lynx with an 83 on the 5,952-yard, par-71 Scottish inspired layout that features miles of tall grass around all 18 holes and plenty of dangerous sand traps.

"Jake's had some rib injury problems, so he's missed a couple of meets, but he's playing well right now," Brighton said. "I'm very excited for him."

Freshman John Ferrell posted an 87, and sophomore Doug Stoakes turned in a 94. Brandon Carlson, the only senior on the roster, completed the scoring with a 102.

Webster City Scores

Brandon Carlson 102, Doug Stoakes 94, Logan Yates DQ, John Ferrell 87, Jake Daniels 83, Dylan Rose 109.

WCHS rookie Logan Yates actually turned in the team's best scorecard of the day - he had an 80 that included a 39 on the back 9. But Yates was disqualified following his round after a member of his group notified officials that the Lynx player had pulled his cell phone out of his bag during the round.

"All Logan did was pull his phone out to see the time and then he put it back in his bag," Brighton said. "He wasn't using his phone, but he still shouldn't have done it, and it's a learning experience for him and for everybody.

"I'm sure he feels very bad, but he'll learn from it and recover. He's going to be a very good player for us in the future."

Ballard won the sectional title with a 317, while Iowa Falls-Alden (320) and Dallas Center-Grimes (321) finished in the second- and third-place slots.

Ballard and Iowa Falls-Alden advanced to Friday's district meet at River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

The Cadets' Tim Taylor fired a 73 to take the medalist honor. He owned a two-shot gap over runner-up Mason Jensen (75) of Ballard.
