This week the U.S. Postal Service backed away from an earlier decision to close more than 3,000 small post offices. That's good news for small towns all over the country. That's good news for all of the communities in Hamilton County.
Many of the rural Post Offices will experience a reduction in the hours of operation, but that may be a small price to pay in order to keep local mail service. While online banking and bill paying have meant a reduction in the volume of mail, many people in rural communities depend on the Postal Service to receive prescription medications, newspapers, packages and other services. This decision means these mail customers won't have to drive to another community to collect their mail. That would be an inconvenience for some, but a hardship for many.
