ALGONA - Two of the premier girls' golf programs in the state went shot for shot yesterday at the Algona Country Club, and when the dust had cleared it was the reigning state champion that prevailed.
Algona Bishop Garrigan - the winner of five Class 1A state titles in the past seven years, including its latest in 2011 - posted a 357 to win the North Central Conference meet by two strokes over last spring's 3A state runner-up Clear Lake (359).
Humboldt was a distant third with a 427. Webster City fell back to ninth with a 528.
Garrigan's Alexa Capesius claimed the medalist honor with an 80, a two-stroke edge on runner-up Meg Monson (82) of Clear Lake. Capesius placed fifth at last year's 1A state meet, while Monson was fourth in the larger class.
Garrigan's Sheridan Berte, the 2011 state runner-up, was third with an 87.
