WCHS boys post best round, slide into 7th at league meet; Lions win

Yates cracks top 10 with solid round of 77

The Daily Freeman Journal

FORT DODGE - Confidence translates into success, something the Webster City boys' golf team is learning each time it steps onto the course.

The rise upward continued for the Lynx yesterday at Lakeside Golf Course, as they posted their best score of the season, a 328, to finish seventh at the North Central Conference meet.

A seventh-place finish in a 10-team field may not seem like anything to write home about, but considering it was less than a month ago when WCHS shot a 386 at the Spencer Invitational, it's easy to see why head coach Dave Brighton is so enthusiastic.

"I am so proud of the team (because) we are continuing to get better every meet," he said. "Our team is really gaining confidence now."

Perennial power Clear Lake grabbed the league title with a 309, while Humboldt was the runner-up with a 314. Iowa Falls-Alden was third with a 316.

Iowa Falls-Alden's Tim Taylor carded a 71 to claim the individual crown. He was just a shot clear of runner-up Chris Grether of Algona and third-place finisher Luke Monson of Clear Lake.
