BLAIRSBURG - The Blairsburg Opera House Preservation Committee will host an auction and dinner on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Blairsburg Opera House.
Refurbishing and fundraising go hand-in-hand and the committee is raising funds to purchase a new air conditioning system for the building.
The 117-year old opera house has graced downtown Blairsburg for over a century and has served as a community center for the town.
After being held privately for many years, the city of Blairsburg turned the responsibility and upkeep of the building over to the committee. Since 1995, committee members have worked to restore the building to its former condition and function.
Saturday's event will begin at 5 p.m. with a free will donation meal of beef burgers, baked beans, bars and choice of beverage, said BOHPC member Viora Welsh.
All food for the meal was donated by opera house supporters, said Welsh, who expressed gratitude for the generous contributions.
The auction will begin at 6 p.m. with auctioneers John and Joey Koop conducting the event.
The committee is grateful to the businesses throughout the Blairsburg, Webster City, Williams and Iowa Falls area who contributed to the list of auction items, said Diane Sinclair, said BOHPC member.
Some of the items for auction include tickets to the Iowa State/Tulsa football game on Sept. 1, a weekday night's lodging at Briggs Woods and a canoe float, an Al McCoy book, an Al McCoy t-shirt, jewelry, artwork, quilts, collectible toys, beauty products, food gift baskets, dog food, oil and filter changes, glass vases and books.
Also for auction are several gift certificates for food, meals and merchandise from area restaurants, grocers and businesses.
