Now the work begins

January 30, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

Webster City had exciting news over the weekend with the announcement that it will be one of the overnight stops on the 40th RAGBRAI this summer. If estimates hold true, it could mean quite an economic boon for the community and for area businesses.

A?study by the University of Northern Iowa found that about $24 million in new spending resulted from the annual bike ride, or about $3 million per host community. Bike riders - 15,000-plus according to some estimates - will eat in our restaurants, shop in local stores, buy gas, groceries, sleep in motels and our campgrounds. The population of our community for one night will more than double.

All of that takes planning, organization and many volunteers to make sure the event is a successful, fun and safe for all the participants, and for the residents of Webster City. We're certain this resilient community is up for the challenge.
