Palmer Eugene Erickson, Jr., 83, died January 1, 2012 at Mary Greeley Medical Center following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Palmer was born May 10, 1928 in Jewell, Iowa to Palmer and Nora (Hoversten) Erickson Sr. He was a lifelong member, baptized and confirmed in Bethesda Lutheran Church. Palmer graduated from Jewell High School in 1946 and Iowa State University in 1950 with a degree in Forestry & Wildlife Management. After college, Palmer was a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On June 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Weih of Tipton, Iowa. Palmer and Marilyn resided outside of Jewell on a farm their entire married life, where Palmer established the Erickson Mink Ranch.

Throughout his life, Palmer was involved in his community and church. He was a trustee at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Palmer was extremely proud of being on the board of education the year South Hamilton School District was formed. He also was a member of the Jewell Lions Club. Palmer loved hunting, trapping, and fishing. He was a member of the Anderson Lake Sports Club and in the past few years was actively involved in the formation of the Little Wall Lake Walleye Club
Palmer was known for his kind heart, never-ending optimism, sound advice and quick wit. Above all, Palmer was devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. His greatest joy in life was his family.
Survived by Marilyn, his wife of 56 years, five children, Sherri (Doug) Hove of Jewell; Joel of Jewell; Wendy (Peter) Gay of Rochester, MN; Rachel (Erik) Hammer of Greeley, CO; and Kent (Joyce) Erickson of Jewell. Sisters Ruth (Gene) Olson of Jewell; Shirley (Floyd) Isebrands of Jewell; and Elinor (Milford) Knutson of Colorado. 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren Heath Hove and daughter Josie of Ames; Amanda (JC) Kruse and Jalen, Austin and Brooklyn of Bondurant; Ross Hove of Ankeny; Janessa Hove of Jewell; Aaron (Jenna) Erickson of rural Story City; Leah (Nick) Consier of Stanhope; Justine (Heath) Johnson of Story City; Ben Erickson of Ames; Samuel Gay and Anna Gay of Rochester, MN; Chris Hammer, Jon Hammer and Jake Hammer of Greeley, CO; and Zach Erickson of Jewell.
Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Nora Erickson, his brother Dean Erickson, a sister Colleen Barnhardt, his son Brad in 2008, granddaughter Nora Gay, and nephews Greg Olson and Tom Isebrands.
Visitation will be Tuesday January 3rd at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell from 4:30- 7:00 pm, funeral services will be Wednesday January 4th at 1:30pm at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. The family requests that memorials be directed to Bethesda Lutheran Church Memorial fund, Little Wall Lake Walleye Club, or the charity of your choice.
