To the editor:
"The people get the Government they deserve."
The origins of this 19th Century saying are unclear but the message is very clear. In a Democratic society we the people are responsible for who we vote into public office.
With elections across the land on Tuesday, I urge everyone to exercise their right to vote. Even though there are many candidates running unopposed, do not think for one minute your vote cannot count. With all of the chatter around town about how our local government runs backwards, your vote is important. Under a council-manager form of government, the city manager is hired to serve the council. What we seem to have, is a council that is run by the manager. A monarch, a "single ruler."?This current council has allowed this to happen. History has shown us how dangerous a "single ruler" form of government can be. There must be checks and balances and we do not have that in our city government.
If you have been treated poorly, without respect, had your homes illegally searched, or watched as this local government knowingly violated Iowa Code, this Election Day is important. How? By using write-in candidates.
Send the message that you want change. Write in someone who you believe can be honest and have the courage to question city officials. Make sure a write-in is legally qualified to hold office in your city. Don't waste it on Mickey Mouse or Joe Walsh. Write in a teacher, neighbor, friend, or the guy at coffee that knows it all. Every vote cast that a candidate does not receive, lets them know all is not right with what they are doing.
So this Tuesday, exercise your right as a free American and vote.
