To the editor:
I would like to shout out huge congratulations to the Webster City Lynx volleyball team. I had the privilege of watching the girls down Clear Lake on Tuesday night to capture the outright NCC conference championship with a little help from Algona getting the best of Iowa Falls-Alden. What an accomplishment. You displayed true team spirit and the focus required to complete such a lofty goal. You should all be proud of your efforts. To accomplish something that hasn't been done in 25 years is truly amazing and should be recognized for its magnitude!
My advice to the girls is this ... never forget. I know that almost all of you are young and have several more years to participate but nothing is a given. Relish the feelings you have right now in this accomplishment because you never know when or if they will come again.
I was a member of the 1986 volleyball team that last won an outright NCC conference title, and after all these years I am still proud of that accomplishment. Watching your exhileration Tuesday night was a reminder of how wonderful the feeling is.
Look at the girls beside you. It is hard in life to find that kind of camaraderie. I still see several of the girls that were on our team all those years ago, and I still have a bond with them. You have experienced something together that nobody else will ever quite understand the full meaning of.
And last but not least ... never lose your passion for one of the greatest sports ever in my opinion. Take an active roll in helping to teach the younger girls a love for the game. You probably don't see it right now, but your accomplishment has just made you a hero to some little girl who now wants to be just like you.
Congratulations again to Coach Jess Howard and the 2011 NCC Conference Championship volleyball team. I look forward to watching you in the future.
