Changes coming for mail delivery

Carriers to pick up mail in FD, return to WC for distribution

Postal officials Thursday confirmed information that has been circulating around the community for several weeks - changes are coming to how letter carriers deliver the mail in Webster City.

Currently, letter carriers pick up mail for delivery in the community at the local post office. Starting in August, carriers will drive to Fort Dodge, pick up the mail for their routes and return to Webster City to distribute letters and packages.

"Postal customers should notice no difference in their delivery,"?according to Rich Watkins, a media representative for the United States Post Office.

"In fact, there may be some who see earlier delivery,"?he said, adding that postal workers will be able to collect items for their routes as early as 6 a.m. each day.

Watkins said he could understand the concerns being expressed in light of the potential closing of offices in many communities across the state.

"But Webster City is a good-sized community,"?he said. "This isn't a premise to slash hours or for the review of the Webster City office."

Letter carriers who reside in Webster City will travel about 80 to 100 miles per day between Fort Dodge and Webster City - partly in their personal vehicles and partly using a post office delivery truck.

Watkins said with the four-lane U.S, Highway 20 at the carriers' disposal, the travel time should be minimal.

He said the changes have all come as cost-saving measures and to make the best use of the facilities available.

Local postal officials declined to comment on the matter.
