To the editor:
I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that our gasoline prices in Webster City have not been competitive with our neighboring communities.
As of this writing on Memorial Day, Webster City gasoline prices are at least 10 cents per gallon higher than Jewell, Clarion, Eagle Grove and Fort Dodge Casey's Stores. I understand freight costs will vary to each community, however each transport wil deliver approximately 8,500 to 9,000 gallons of gasoline. 9,000 gallons at 10 cents equal $900. That is far above and beyond the freight costs of 20 miles difference from Webster City to any of our neighboring communities.
I believe our gasoline merchants in Webster City are taking advantage of customer loyality and those people who don't travel out of town often. This pricing difference makes it harder to remember to shop local which is probably more important today in Webster City than any time in recent history. How does this look to those people and or industries looking at our community?
I would encourage my fellow citizens to continue to buy local and our gasoline retailers to get their prices in line and be competitive.
