Now that area schools have dismissed for summer, more children will be on bikes, walking and playing on the warm days ahead. Perhaps it's time to offer a reminder to motorists to keep an eye out for these youngsters.
Children often have their minds on things other that being safe at crosswalks or looking for oncoming traffic as they retrieve a ball from the street. Add in the distraction of cell phones, MP3 players and other electronic devices, and many are all but oblivious to conditions around them.
That's why it's so important for drivers to be extra vigilant during the summer months. Slow down, take your time driving through our residential areas. And parents, take some time to remind children of the importance of watching for traffic when they are near the street. It takes a united effort to keep our young people safe.
