A good use for an old building

April 22, 2011
The Daily Freeman Journal

This week, local representatives of a seven-county collaboration, Skyline Inc., pitched a propsed use for the old Hamilton Hospital building. The group would like to see part of the facility used for a crisis stabilization unit and a transitional living program.

With the closing of several Iowa psychiatric facilities such as the programs once operated at Trinity Regional Medical Center and at Ellsworth Hospital in Iowa Falls, there appears to be a genuine need for such a program in a central location. Hamilton County might just be that location.

Skyline Inc. proposes to use the second floor patient care area with six crisis rooms and 11 transitional living rooms. Both sections would have separate day rooms and would be staffed around the clock.

A?public meeting will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the social services building at 500 Fairmeadow Drive. The public is invited to attend to learn more about the proposal.

The old hospital building served as a place of caring and healing for many years. This proposal could save part of the building from demolition and could give people from all over the state a chance to heal and grow.
