Use caution around school buses

March 23, 2011
The Daily Freeman Journal

To the Editor:

The Webster City Schools transportation department transports many students throughout the entire day, with many stops all over Webster City. We also transport prekindergarten and preschool students several times a day,

The reason for this letter is to make a strong plea to the people of Webster City. We all need to be more aware of the school buses. Over the past weeks, we have had several people going through the stop lights and stop arms being used by our buses. The reports I am getting from our drivers concerning the people passing a stopped bus, is that most are on their cell phones and not paying attention.

People, please. That phone call won't be nearly as important as you may think, especially if you don't see a 4-year-old getting off the bus, and he or she is hit by you while crossing the street to his or her home.

Besides putting the safety of our young children in jeopardy, this is also illegal. The fine for passing a stopped bus is $180 plus court costs.

Please be more aware of your surroundings as you drive along our streets during the school year. A child's life might just depend upon it.
