To the Editor:
Shortly before elections and on Veterans Day, it is easy to find politicians praising the military and veterans. However, finding leaders who consistently support them when it counts is more difficult.
State Sen. Rich Olive is one of those legislative leaders who consistently supports the military and veterans. I know because I'm both a Desert Storm veteran still serving in the military and an Iowa State Senator.
While I'm retiring this year, I have enjoyed working with Sen. Olive. He is an effective advocate for veterans, service members, and their families. For example, Sen. Olive played a significant role in making Iowa the first state to adopt all ten state priority issues of the Department of Defense.
Sen. Olive stood up to those who opposed the renovation of National Guard armories and the Iowa Veterans Home. He also fought the special interests wanting to deny military spouses the same benefits provided in 37 other states.
I'm glad Sen. Rich Olive is there to support Iowa's veterans, service members, and their families.
