STORY CITY - Wrestling with only half a team, South Hamilton scored points where it could and racked up three medal-winning performances on Saturday at the Jim Kinyon Norsemen Invitational.
Hawks' head coach Corey Klemp elected to enter many of his underclassman wrestlers in the junior varsity tournament, which took place prior to the start of the varsity action. That left the varsity roster with only seven members and took South Hamilton out of the discussion for a high finish in the team standings.
"We just wanted to get our younger guys in a situation where they could get in some matches where they could have some success and build off that, and it worked out real well," Klemp said. "We had six different kids win the JV tournament and every one of our kids got a win"
Sixth-ranked (Class 2A) East Marshall/GMG crowned six champions en route to a team-title total of 220 points. Gilbert and its three champions was second with 199 and Grinnell took third with one champ and 164.
South Hamilton compiled 77.5 points to sit at the back of the eight-team pack.
"It was an up and down day for us," Klemp said. "The kids wrestled to their seeds for the most part, but we didn't really have any standout victories. We won the matches that we should have, but those toss-up matches, we didn't take advantage of them."
Seniors Chris Engelby (140 pounds) and Bryan Martin (189) both reached the championship round and placed second for South Hamilton. Senior Justin Head (160) won three of four matches on the day and took third.
Engelby moved down from 145 - the weight class he had competed in up until Saturday - and scored a pair of victories. He opened up his finals match against third-ranked (2A) Blake Meling of East Marshall/GMG with a takedown, but Meling quickly regained control and went on to win by major decision, 10-2.
The sixth-ranked (1A) Martin used a first-period pin over Grinnell's Zack Keenan to reach the championship, but once there he ran into a buzz-saw in top-ranked (2A) Sam Upah of East Marshall/GMG. Upah put Martin on his back quickly and wrapped up the title with a fall in 1:04.
Head recorded a fall, a major decision and a technical fall on his journey to the bronze medal. South Hamilton also received fourth-place finishes from Matthew Johnston (152) and Casey Coy (171). Brandon Crouse (215) and Jedd Ahlberg (285) were both sixth.
