Geary Meyer announced Monday that he plans to seek a seat on the Webster City City Council in the special election to be held on January 19, 2010, to fill one of the two unexpired terms ending December 31, 2011.

Last Wednesday, the City Council decided to call a special election in lieu of making to appointments to the vacant council seats. The Council previously had called for applications from the public and Meyer was one of six area residents who submiteed applications to be considered for the appointments. He is the first candidate to step forward for the special election.

Meyer said his primary reason for seeking one of the two vacancies on the City Council is to "give back" to the Webster City community.

He said he sees the "I" in city as representing an individual's responsibility to give something back to his community. He added that this is the time for him to contribute to his home of the past 27 years.

"I want to positively serve and represent the city of Webster City and its citizens. I will work hard with our city council team to resolve issues and get things done, " he said.

"My goal is to impact the future of Webster City to insure our children and future generations have the same quality of life and privileges my family has enjoyed in our wonderful city of Webster City," Meyer said.

Meyer has 34 years of business experience, including 17 years of financial and credit management and 10 years of marketing experience. He believes he has the personal commitment and dedication necessary to deal with the present and future issues in Webster City.

Meyer was born and raised on a family dairy farm near Dows. He is a 1970 high school graduate of Dows Community School and has a bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University. For seven years after college Meyer was employed at Postal Finance Company, Sioux City, and has been a resident of Webster City and employed at Van Diest Supply Company for the past 27 years.

Meyer has been married for 34 years and has two grown children. His wife, Denice, is employed at Webster City Schools as the high school principal's secretary. Their daughter, Angie, is a 1999 Webster City high school graduate. She has a RN/BSN from the University of Iowa and is employed at Iowa Health Systems, Des Moines. Their son, Matt is a 2004 Webster City high school graduate, has attended Iowa Central Community College, and is employed at Classic Carpet and Interiors, Webster City.

Meyer is a trustee on the Fred M. Fuller Board and serves on the advisory and planning committee at Briggs Woods Golf Course. He is a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and has served on several boards and committees, including Administrative Board, Staff Parrish committee, Finance Committee chairman, Methodist Men president and North Central District Ingathering treasurer.

Meyer has served as president in the Iowa and Midwest regional associations of the National Association of Credit Management. He is a past member of Webster City Rotary.
