Five proposals under review
Hotel/Motel Tax Board receive proposals from WC groupsBy CARRIE OLSON Daily Freeman-Journal Staff Writer
Five proposals were reviewed at last night's preliminary Hotel Motel Tax board meeting.
The board decided to let all five of the applicants become finalists, allowing them to come and pitch their proposals at 6:30 on Dec. 1 at its next meeting.
The first applicant was from the City, which requested $9,181.79 for proposed signs for the city parks. The signs would be similar to the wayfinding signs in towns, to list both the address and the amenities offered at each park.
"The park signs in the city are definitely outdated. Some new signs would be helpful," said Brian Stroner, board member.
A sign in front of Fuller Hall was also proposed.
Board member Pat Westcott said, "I use Fuller Hall regularly, and I feel that it is under-utitilized in our community. The proposed sign could be very beneficial."
Second, the Hamilton County Fair Foundation requested $15,536. The foundation wants conference center equipment for the fairgrounds. This would include a portable stage, large folding screen, folding chairs and round tables to enhance the facilities to promote events and to hopefully attract organizations to use the fairgrounds.
Third, Webster City Community Theatre asked for $9,925 for proposed advertising, publicity and new signage, including a lighted sign in front of the theatre and a banner to go across Superior St. The theater also wanted help in defraying the expenses in hosting the state convention of Iowa Community Theatre Association next year.
Board member Linda Conaway said that, "This would definitely benefit the community. This proposal has great potential for exposure."
The North Central Iowa Regional Sports Authority District asked for $2,000 to continue promoting athletic activities in the district, such as the Boone Bash.
The fifth organization to request money, was the Farm Progress Show. The requested amount for this event is $2,200. The show would host a reception for exhibitors.
On Dec. 21, the board will give its recommendations on the proposals to the City Council.
