Charge against Angela Meeker dismissed
Child endangerment charge dropped; mom of toddler to face accessory, obstructing chargesBy ANGELA BURCH For the Daily Freeman-Journal
JEWELL - A charge of child endangerment resulting in death against the mother of 15-month-old child killed in December 2008 was dismissed in Iowa District Court.
Angela Marie Meeker, 21, was charged on June 29 with child endangerment resulting in the death of her 15-month-old son. Her husband, Michael Meeker Jr., 29, of Radcliffe, was charged with first-degree murder in the toddler's death.
Tanner Doran was found dead at his home in Jewell on Dec. 1, 2008. The State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny ruled that blunt force trauma to the head was the cause of the toddler's death.
"It has been determined that a reasonable likelihood of conviction does not exist for ... child endangerment resulting in death," according to court documents filed by Assistant Attorney General Denise A. Timmins.
Angela Meeker was charged with accessory after the fact and obstructing prosecution when the child endangerment charge was dropped.
Court documents state that Meeker knew that "a public offense had been committed by Michael Meeker Jr., and did harbor or aid (him) with the intent to prevent the apprehension (of him)."
The documents also state that on April 16, Meeker knowingly gave false information that would be used by prosecutors in the trial of Michael Meeker.
Court documents filed charges Michael Meeker Jr. with murder stating that "death occurred under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to human life."
Meeker is being held in the Hamilton County Jail under a $1 million bond. A trial date is scheduled for March 2010.
Angela Meeker was released from the Hamilton County Jail with supervision to the Department of Corrections. Her arraignment on the two new charges is scheduled for Nov. 2.
The toddler's father, Michael Doran, declined to comment due to the ongoing investigation and pending litigation.
