Second H1N1 flu mist clinic announced
By ANNE BLANKENSHIP Daily Freeman-Journal Managing EditorHamilton County Public Health has announced a second H1N1 flu mist clinic for Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jewell Fire Station. The clinic is for 3 and 4-year-olds who live in the South Hamilton School District, according to public health officials.
A Monday clinic will was previously announced for the Missionary Alliance Church in Blairsburg from 4 to 6 p.m. That clinic is for 3 and 4-year-olds who live in the Northeast Hamilton School District.
The H1N1 vaccine is available at this time in the flu mist form, with an injectable version to be made available at a later date, according to Dawn Trujillo, nurse with Hamilton County Public Health.
The nasal mist is a live attenuated vaccine, meaning the mist is the live virus, but is weakened so as not to cause illness, she explained.
Certain people should not take the vaccine, she said, including the following:
those with severe allergies to eggs;
children younger than 2 and adults 50 years and older;
pregnant women;
anyone with weakened immune systems;
anyone with long-term health problems such as heart disease, kidney or liver disease, lung disease, metabolic disease such as diabetes, asthma or anemia and other blood disorders;
anyone with certain muscle or nerve disorders, such as cerebral palsey, that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems;
anyone in close contact with a person with a severely weakened immune system such as a person receiving cancer treatment;
children or adolescents on long-term aspirin therapy.
The person bringing the child for the vaccine will need to sign a permission slip for the child. The signee must be at least 18 years old.
