Volunteers sought for Boone River clean-up

POSTED: July 5, 2009

Local volunteers will haul trash from the Boone River on Saturday, Aug. 15, during a county-wide service project coordinated by Iowa State University Extension, the city of Webster City, and Hamilton County Conservation.

The public is invited to join the clean-up effort by meeting at 7 a.m. Aug. 15 to register at Briggs Woods Park, Shelter # 1 south of Webster City. Those children under 15 years of age wanting to participate must be accompanied by an adult. Participation agreements and medical information forms must also be signed by a parent for children under the age of 18. These forms can be located at the Hamilton County Extension Office website at www.extension.iastate.edu/hamilton.

Clean-up participants will pilot canoes along a 7.6 mile section of Boone River, between Bever Bridge and Tunnel Mill. Along the way volunteers, will remove pop cans, plastic sacks, tires, and other pieces of a large amount of trash they find in the river's waters and banks.

Sponsors will provide lunch. The clean-up will last until 2 p.m. A limited number of canoes will be available on a first come first serve basis. If you have a canoe or kayak, please bring along. Participants should bring work gloves, closed-toe shoes, garden trowel or small shovel, sunscreen, insect repellant, snacks, and head covering. Transportation to and from the canoe launch site and Briggs Woods Park will be provided.

The Boone River Clean-up Committee has received a great deal of support from local entities including: The Trash Man, Hamilton County Solid Waster Transfer Station, Hamilton County Landfill, Webster City Custom Meats, Hy-Vee, Fareway, Xenia Rural Water, Webster City Rotary and Webster City HYPE. Grant funding has been received from the Iowa Department of Transportation Keep Iowa Beautiful and the Webster City Hotel/Motel Tax Committee to assist with this project.
