Plans gear up for annual HC Relay for Life
The 11th annual Hamilton County Relay For Life is coming to Webster City. The event will be from 6 p.m. Friday July 17 to 8 a.m. Saturday July 18 at the Webster City High School's Bob Buckley Track.
"We just want people to come out and join in the fight! It is a family event with something for everyone!" said Hamilton County Chairperson Lynn Burroughs.
The event is a fundraiser with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is also a way to raise awareness of cancer and remembrance of cancer patients.
The set up for the event will begin at 10 a.m. Friday with registration at 5 p.m. and opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. The laps will begin at 6:15 p.m. with the American Legion starting the laps. Survivors who wish to walk are asked to contact Miriam Carlson at (515) 291-8537 or Linda Lahr (515) 297-2407.
Currently 16 teams have signed up for the relay and are running fundraisers. There is time for other teams to join and are asked to contact Teresa Hoffman at (515) 835-2620 or Lisa Miller (515) 297-0867. It is asked that at least one team member participate in the laps.
Concession stands will operate from 5 p.m. to midnight and games and activities will be from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. A pie auction will take place at 8 p.m.
The luminary ceremony is scheduled for 10 p.m. with Pat Powers reading a list of names of those who died from cancer. This will be followed by a fireworks display. Luminary forms are available at all Webster City banks with a $10 suggested donation. Luminary forms can also be obtained by calling Tina Keane at (319) 795-5995.
The track will remain open through the night for walks or prayers. The event will end on Saturday at 8 a.m. with a closing ceremony.
All are invited to attend.
