Sloshing their way to state

Lynx girls bag a regional 4-peat, send 9 events to Des Moines

NEVADA - With her right hamstring wrapped tightly to keep a bag of ice in place, Mikaela Pruismann limped off the infield Friday night after her work was done. And what a job she did.

The Webster City junior didn't let anything bother her - not the tightness in her leg, not the annoying rain that cascaded down constantly and certainly not the competition - as she sprinted to the front of the field time and time again at a Class 3A regional meet.

Pruismann captured four gold medals - she won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, and also anchored the Lynx sprint medley relay to victory - and sent a message to the rest of the state that she will be a force to be reckoned with at the state meet later this week.

"My leg is definitely sore, but I've got some time to rest, so I'll be ready to go (at state)," Pruismann said. "Qualifying (for state) at the beginning of the year was the dream and I knew if I put my mind to it I could, but now I just want to get better times and run by best down there."

But Pruismann won't be alone at state, far from it. Webster City qualified in nine events and piled up 137 points to hand head coach Duane Harding his fourth straight regional championship. Algona was a close second with 132.

"(The four regional titles) are what I'm most proud of because when I started my career with the girls nine years ago there was absolutely nothing on the wall," Harding said. "Now we've got four (regional banners) hanging up there and it's all because of the kids. It's not very often that you get a whole group of kids that believe in you as a coach and will do exactly what you ask them to do, and that makes it so much easier as a coach."

Senior Britney Roberts will run in four events at state as well.

"It's really exciting for the seniors just because we've worked really hard and I guess it paid off," Roberts said after qualifying in the 800, 4x800, distance medley and 4x400. "I'm really tired and my legs hurt right now, but it was worth it. We're sending a lot of people to state this year, so that's great."

Pruismann could have walked the final 10 meters in all three of her individual races after building insurmountable leads. She won the 100 in 12.55 seconds, the 200 in 26.37 and the 400 in 59.35. She took the stick on the anchor of the sprint medley in fifth, but made up the difference in the first 150 meters before blowing the rest of the field out of the water. Webster City won the sprint medley in 1:55.14.

Still, Pruismann wasn't content and she says she'll have to be better - much better, in fact - when she steps onto the blue oval inside Drake Stadium.

"I'm happy with the (results) because they get me where I need to be, but my times need to be faster," she said. "I should have run faster in the 40059 (seconds) isn't fast enough."

Webster City's other victory came from its 4x800 unit of Roberts, Paige Bonjour, Breanne Wagner and Megan Wood in 10:01.07.

The Lynx were second in the shuttle hurdle (1:10.75), distance medley (4:24.46) and 4x400 (4:18.10) relays. Roberts was also second in the 800 (2:25.95).
