MADRID - A lot can change over the course of a basketball season.
With the season on the line for both squads, Southeast Webster-Grand went on an 11-2 run over the final three minutes to upend Northeast Hamilton, 51-43, in a girls' Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinal-round contest here on Tuesday.
Not only did the victory push the Eagles into Friday's semifinal round against third-ranked AGWSR Ackley, but it also avenged a 22-point loss to the Trojets back in late November.
"Anytime you lose at this point in the season it's disappointing, but it wasn't for a lack of effort," Northeast Hamilton head coach Brandon Frohwein said after his club ended its season at 14-9 overall. "The kids played hard, but we just couldn't get the one play that we needed down the stretch."
Northeast Hamilton led 41-40 midway through the final period, but then the shots simply stopped falling. SEW-G (9-14) took the lead with two minutes remaining and then hit a number of free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Maddi Hansen led the Eagles with 17 points and Morgan Hansen tossed in 13 - all in the second half - to help SEW-G overcome a three-point deficit at the intermission.
Kalli Richardson had a team-high 17 for the Trojets and Summer Anderson had one of her most productive offensive games with 11. Holly Heiden chipped in nine points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds.
