Class 2A top-ranked North Polk won the 12-team tournament with a championship-game rout of Boone. The Hawks accepted the third-place trophy after their 8-6 victory over AGWSR Ackley in the consolation final on Saturday.
"Anytime you finish behind only North Polk and Boone, you're not doing too bad," Delagardelle said.
South Hamilton (10-7) and AGWSR combined to commit 13 errors, but the Hawks came through with eight hits in their victory. Sandra Samuelson and Abigail Swalla both pounded out two hits, and Sara Samuelson added a 2-RBI single. Mollie Ullestad drove in a pair of runs as well.
"It was one of those second games on a hot day type of games," Delagardelle said. "The sun really was a factor, especially for the infielders, and both teams had girls lose the ball in the sun. But I'm very proud of the girls because they kept attacking with the bats."
South Hamilton trailed 3-2 before it rallied with four runs in the last half of the third inning.
Earlier on Saturday, the Hawks had no answer against Boone in a 10-2 setback. It was the Toreadors second win this season over South Hamilton.
"It just didn't seem like we were ready to go," Delagardelle said. "Boone seems to take us out of our style of play. We weren't able to do the things that we need to do to be successful."
Swalla drove in the Hawks' only two runs with a single in the third inning. The senior also ripped a double, as did teammate Chelsie Jacobson.
Boone rattled Sara Samuelson for 11 hits. The Toreadors scored three times in the opening inning and then put the game well out of reach with six in the sixth.
South Hamilton will play two on Monday. Colo-NESCO will come to Jewell for a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
